Condition of Dalits in Bihar miserable: Thorat

Inaugurating the Babu Jagjivanram Chamber at Bihar Central University, Prof Thorat said that, in the entire country, the Dalits of Bihar and Odisha fared the worst and their participation in the socio-economic activities was negligible

GAYA (Bihar): Academician and former chairman of University Grants Commission Prof SK Thorat has expressed deep concern over the condition of Dalits in the state. Inaugurating the Babu Jagjivanram Chamber at Bihar Central University, Prof Thorat said that, in the entire country, the Dalits of Bihar and Odisha fared the worst and their participation in the socio-economic activities was negligible. He said that two-thirds of the Dalits of the two states were deprived of houses and other basic amenities; only 18 per cent Dalits were landowners while the corresponding figure for non-Dalits was 40 per cent. Recalling the contribution of Babu Jagjivanram, Thorat said that his work in the field of labour welfare was worth emulating. Also his role in India’s Green Revolution, Thorat added, should not be forgotten.
