Prakash Ambedkar: ‘Let everyone come together to save the Constitution’

Prakash Ambedkar, president of the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, says all sections of society, including Dalits, are involved in the battle he has launched to save the Constitution

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is on a mission to alter the Constitution by 2022. The RSS wants a Constitution based on Manuvad to be implemented. It thus becomes necessary at this point to save the Constitution that Dr B.R. Ambedkar drafted and everyone irrespective of religious and caste affiliations needs to come together. This is what Babasaheb Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar believes. He is leading “Save the Constitution” campaign. The next stop on the campaign trail is Parliament Street, Delhi, where on 26 February he has called a demonstration. During an interview over the phone, he tells Nawal Kishore Kumar what the campaign is about:

Prakash Ambedkar

These days, you have been on a campaign trail. What is at the top of your agenda?
The RSS has hatched a huge conspiracy. They want to replace Babasaheb’s Constitution with a Constitution that is based on Manuvad. The RSS people themselves have also made this admission. Their plan is to amend the Constitution by 2022 – once the BJP has a majority in the Rajya Sabha. They want to deprive the Dalits, Adivasis and the Backwards of their rights. The aim of this campaign to stop them from doing so. We need to realize that it is the Constitution that secures our rights.

You have appealed to the Dalits and Backwards to come together.
No, I have asked all sections of society to come together. This is our tagline: Those who want to save the Constitution, come with us.

Do you feel that in the past few decades, Dalits and Backwards have grown apart? Will this campaign bring them together?
In my view, there are no differences among Dalits on this issue. We have asked everyone to join us. They will join us.

What has been the contribution of the Left parties to this campaign?
We have kept them away from this campaign. Let them do their job. We will do ours.

The BJP and the RSS are talking about reviewing reservations. If this happens, the OBCs will be affected the most. How will you address this?
We will address this concern. This is the reason for our campaign. We will remain united and save the Constitution
