If a day is set aside for each language in which journalism is done in India and the rest of the world – as has been done in the case of Hindi journalism – 365 days would hardly suffice. India has many institutions for imparting training and education in journalism. A journalism department was launched in Panjab University in 1941. But it was not meant for a particular language or languages. Subsequently, separate departments and institutions have been established for teaching Hindi journalism. What is different about Hindi journalism that it requires a dedicated institution?
