A few days ago Dr Hemlata Maheshwar, head of the Hindi department at Jamia Millia Islamia, came over for a talk and tea with one of her research students. We were talking about Dalit literary history, and hearing some of the most exciting stories about the first-generation Dalit writers from the 1970s and comparing them with the contemporary Dalit literary scene, she exclaimed, “But then Shahdara today is Dharavi!”
